Setting up Piercing, PMU, and other services through Porter

How to set up any non-tattoo services in Porter

Updated this week

If you offer non-tattoo services at your shop (like piercings, PMU, or other services), you can easily set those up in Porter to enable online bookings, aftercare messages, and waivers specific to those services.

πŸ”§ How to set up other services

  1. Click your name in the top right corner

  2. Go to Manage Shop > Booking > Other Services

  3. Click Add New Service

From there, fill out the following:

  • Service Category (Piercing, PMU, or Other)

  • Name of the service

  • Description of what’s included

  • Service providers who are available to perform it

  • Default duration & price (this is just a defaultβ€”clients will never see it as a firm price)

  • Deposit amount if you want to collect deposits

  • Enable online bookings βœ…

  • Waiver to use for this service πŸ“

  • Minimum age required for the service πŸŽ‚

  • Aftercare link specific to this service πŸ”—

πŸ“’ Just like tattoo aftercare, we'll automatically send aftercare SMS messages for these services when the appointment is checked out.

🧷 Setting up Piercing Services

There are two ways to set up piercing services in Porter. Once you select Piercing as the category, you'll see a new question:

Is this a general piercing service, or specific to an individual piercing location?

Option 1: General Piercing Service

βœ”οΈ One unified service for all piercing types
βœ”οΈ Same providers, price, duration, and description
βœ”οΈ Select which piercing locations your shop offers
βœ”οΈ Clients choose their piercing type when booking

Perfect if your pricing, time, and providers are the similar regardless of the piercing.

Option 2: Specific Piercing Services

πŸ’‘ Create separate entries for each piercing (e.g., Navel Piercing, Nose Piercing, Ear Lobe Piercing)

βœ”οΈ Custom name, description, price, and time for each
βœ”οΈ Different artists can be assigned to each service
βœ”οΈ Clients see a full piercing menu during booking

Takes a little longer to set up, but makes your offerings clearer and more tailored.

πŸ“‹ Booking Type: Direct Bookings vs. Bookable by Requests

For each service, you can choose how clients book:

Direct Bookings

  • Clients pick a date & time, pay their deposit, and they're booked β€” no approval needed

  • This is the default for all Other Services and works great for straightforward services like piercings with standard pricing

Bookable by Requests

  • Clients submit a request through your intake form instead of booking directly

  • You (or the assigned provider) review and accept the request before the client can choose a date & time

  • This follows the same flow as tattoo booking requests β€” perfect for services that need more discussion upfront (like custom PMU work, large-scale projects, or services with variable pricing)

To set this up:

  1. Go to Manage Shop β†’ Booking β†’ Other Services

  2. Click on the service you want to edit (or create a new one)

  3. Look for the Booking Type setting

  4. Choose "Direct Bookings" or "Bookable by Requests"

πŸ“ Custom Intake Forms for Other Services

You can now customize the intake form for each of your Other Services β€” just like you can for tattoo booking requests.

This is especially useful if you've set a service to Bookable by Requests, since the intake form is what clients fill out when submitting their request. But even for directly bookable services, you can customize what info you collect from clients during booking.

To set up a custom intake form:

  1. Go to Manage Shop β†’ Booking β†’ Other Services

  2. Click on the service you want to edit

  3. Look for the Intake Form settings

  4. Toggle questions on or off to control what clients are asked when booking or requesting this service

This lets you collect different information depending on the service. For example, you might ask for reference photos on a PMU service but skip that question for piercings.

πŸ’Έ Service-Specific Commission Rates

If a provider at your shop performs more than one type of service, you can now set a different commission rate for each service.

For example, you might pay a provider:

  • 70% for tattoo appointments

  • 90% for piercing appointments

This is configured per provider, per service β€” so each artist or technician can have a unique split depending on what they're doing.

To set this up:

  1. Go to Manage Shop β†’ Team

  2. Click on the provider you want to edit

  3. In their Payout Settings, you'll see the option to set service-specific commission rates

  4. Set a custom percentage for each service the provider is assigned to

  5. For their Tattoo Commission rate, that rate is always set from the Manage Team page. Their default commission rate from the Manage Team page will always apply to Tattoo appointments.

If you don't set a service-specific rate, the provider's default commission rate will apply to all services.
